WHICH VERSION TO CHOOSE :
In this directory you will now see two directories with
acornet archives in :
acorn-stack-version
freenet-stack-version
Both these versions are currently at v0.21 and essentially
contain the same freeware applications.
What's the different between them :
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Freenet version :
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The major difference between them is that the
freenet version is a complete version and will
work on its own without you having to add anything
(unless you want to add Segio Monesi's shareware
driver which is available from
ftp://freenet.barnet.ac.uk/pub/freenet/s.monesi/)
The freenet version also now defaults to TTFN as
its main reader although I've included a copy of
Messenger as well and instuctions on how to swap
over to it.
The Acorn stack version :
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The acorn stack version requires you to already have
the !Internet and !InetSetup applications that are
now supplied as standard with new RCP's and version
5.04 of the internet module.
Currently the only way to get hold of theses if you
do not already have them, is to buy the Acorn Web
Browser, or Java CD's on which there is also a copy
of the new !Boot structure which also contains the
latest !Internet and !InetSetup bits.
If you are not sure whether you have this already or
not, then double click on your existing !Boot and
see whether you have Internet under the Network option.
If not, then you will need the freenet version.
Press F12 and type 'help internet' and that should tell
you what version you have.
The acorn stack version is also perhaps a little trickier
to get up and running with as it has to integrate with
the InetSetup configuration and although it now attempts
to do this for you as part of the configuration process
(and in testing does this fine) reports seem to indicate
that a few prople are having the occasional problem.
Which is better ?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The only real advantage of using the Acorn stack version
is that there is also a PPP driver that comes with it and I
have fouond that it is noticeably faster than using SLIP
with the freenet version. In terms of reliability, I have
not yet found any problems using it with my Demon Account.
But if you want something that is tried and tested and the
least potential problem - then stick with the freenet
version.
